Surfing England is the recognised National Governing Body (NGB) for Surfing in England. A not for profit membership organisation run by surfers for surfers. It operates for the support & development of Surfing in England and proudly serves the sport of surfing and its membership of surfers, surf coaches, surf clubs and surf schools.
Surfing England was recognised by Sport England as the NGB for Surfing in England in June 2017 after a seven-year-journey to build a fit for purpose and modern NGB.
At the end of 2016 the English Surfing Federation merged with the British organising body for Surfing, Surfing GB, to enable Surfing England to achieve the NGB status.
The structure of the organisation, under the board of twelve volunteer directors, fits with best practice guidelines set out by Sport England; whilst the professional team of five staff man the North Devon office.
The refreshed body represents the sport, across its disciplines of short board, long board, body board, body surf, knee board and stand up paddle board, at the highest level and accredited by Sport England, England’s sports council, as well as the International Surfing Association and the European Surfing Federation.
Its primary purpose is to support and develop surfing in England. It does this through a number of ways but operates as a membership organisation offering service to surfers, affiliations to surf clubs, and accreditations to surf coaches and surf schools. At elite level it operates the annual English Surfing Championships and enters English national teams to International events. At grass roots level it supports surf clubs, helps break down barriers to surfing, educates on safety and etiquette, works to protect the environment and much more.
