Wrestler Ahmet Kireççi from Mersin

He started sports at the age of 17 in boxing and athletics. He quit athleticism after he was injured during a training session. Later he entered the Kumkapı Wrestling Club in Istanbul. He served for a long time under Kasımpaşa SK. He wore the national jersey for the first time in the Balkan Games held in Izmir in 1933. Kireççi, wrestling both in Greco-Roman and freestyle, won the Balkan Games three times in Greco-Roman, one at 87 kg (1933) and two at 79 kg (1937 and 1940). By getting third at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics won the first Olympic medal in 79 kg free of Turkey and the bronze medal in freestyle wrestling du. He won the gold medal in heavyweight in the Greco-Roman 1948 Olympic Games in London. He quit wrestling in 1949. He worked as a business in Mersin, his birthplace.

He died in a traffic accident on 17 August 1978.
